Characters on the Couch
Gabriel St Claire, gives advice on life, love and lust.
Is my character a psychopath or a sociopath?
Dear Gabriel
I’m writing a crime novel (with a strong love theme.) I’m a little confused between the terms psychopath and sociopath. Could you give me the quick version please?
Samantha
Dear Samantha
The quick version is that these terms are often used interchangeably, along with the term antisocial personality disorder, to describe a person who has no regard for the feelings of others, fails to feel guilt or remorse, seems to lack a conscience, has only his or her own interests at heart, and will usually disregard the rules and norms of society.
Quite often these traits will be evident in young teens who show a pattern of cruelty and misbehaviour which goes well beyond mischief making. Some academics suggest that sociopaths may be less adapted to society and can live on the fringes, their lives seeming more chaotic, their actions less thought through. In contrast psychopaths may be more adapted to society, using charm, manipulation and intelligence to win approval, and planning their deeds (and crimes) more carefully.
I hope this helps you to flesh out your characters more carefully, though I have to say that even using the word “flesh” around these types of people makes me anxious! As for love, well the psychopath will generally not make a good partner so I hope your characters are lucky enough to see the light before it’s too late, if you get my drift.
