All About Love

Introduction to the free module

Many people think Romance writing is a bit like knitting.

There’s a pattern to follow and, even if you’re a bit clumsy at first, you can knock off a finished product in a few afternoons while the kids are out playing.

If you have approached Romance writing with a swagger and a shrug, with the idea that “everyone knows” it’s easy as pie, you’ll have discovered the error of your ways.

And if so, you may have been left with the dejected feeling of having failed at something you thought would be a cinch.

Neither attitude is realistic. Genre fiction isn’t a lesser form of story-telling. But it’s not a mysterious process either.

Are you a natural romance writer?

Answer these questions to get a sense of whether you have a career as a successful romance writer waiting for you.

1. Do you really and truly believe in love?
2. Are you interested in why people fall in love?
3. Do you love reading about people and their lives – in books, magazines or newspapers?
4. Do you notice the way people look, how the speak and the way they behave, in public and when they think no-one is watching them?
5. Do you take a guilty pleasure in eavesdropping on other people’s conversations?
6. Do you invent life histories for strangers you see in bus queues, restaurants or parks?
7. Do you secretly feel cheated by stories that don’t end happily?
8. Do you spend time thinking about the reasons people respond to each other in the way they do?
9. Do you enjoy talking about relationships with your friends?
10. Do you read romance novels, chick-lit or great love stories?

Yes, yes and again, yes

If you answered yes to all or most of these questions, you could be a born romance writer. You have the most important attributes. You’re interested in people and you know that great love is possible.

Module One

This module is free. Don’t even think about it. Jump right in and start today. It’s about writing romance. In fact, it’s about writing anything - well, perhaps not manuals on automobile maintenance - but anything in the fiction line.

It forms your basic introduction to the writing life.

We will teach you how to find your own voice and write with fluency and conviction. Perhaps, most important of all, we will confirm your power to make the hearts of your readers beat that little bit faster.

Romance isn’t just about heroines and heroes. It’s about using the power of your unique voice to make your reader believe in the world you create for them.

This module, which prepares and leads you into both The Guide to Writing Romance and The Guide to Writing Lesbian Romance, consists of four short sections. We’ve designed it so that you’ll have fun trying a number of writing drills, while equipping yourself with skills.

The exercises will free your inner writer, develop confidence, banish self-conscious writing and grow your own writer’s voice.
